A few ideas to help unlock your employees' potential
What does your employee’s ‘why’ look like?
The first step towards fostering a motivational environment is to clearly understand your people’s personal goals and and how being successful at work can help them to realise those goals.
The moment we create a connection their mind – the link between their personal goals, business goals and what they do daily during work – self-motivation kicks in.
This is the defining moment a person changes from someone with a job to someone with a purpose.
Think about the emotional wellbeing of your employees
Emotional well-being is not a luxury; it’s the energy fuelling your employee’s performance. When it’s low, their performance is low, which has both a short and long-term impact on the business for which they work.
Are you really interested?
Be genuinely interested in your employees as individuals. The old way of thinking - focussing on pay, bonus, role, annual performance reviews, is just that, old. The fresher thinking connects an individual’s personal mission and purpose to that of the business, focuses on career development, ongoing performance and takes a genuine interest in their wellbeing inside and outside of the workplace.
Set your people up for success
Do your team know what great performance looks like, feels like and acts like? If you haven’t created absolute clarity about what the expectations are for their role, explained and demonstrated what great looks like, and set them up for success, it’s almost predictable that you and your people will be working to different models and interpretations of what great looks like.
Build self-confidence by enabling them with the mindset (attitude, resilience, will), the skillset (technical or soft skills) and the toolset (tools to do their job) to unlock their potential and deliver excellence.
What does success look like?
Success is such an emotive word; it means different things to each one of us. We are influenced daily by factors that determine our definition of success. Do you know what your people’s definition of success is and what they are personally working towards?
Where are we going?
A compelling vision permeates work with purpose and meaning. For example, the NHS saves lives and Google changes the way the world communicates. Showing your people how what they do each today is contributing to that vision acts like the ignition to purposeful work.
